Hired Gunslinger is a historical western romance series that includes Angel Heart (1988), Wild Texas Promise (1990), Sweet Texas Surrender (1991), and Blazing Texas Nights (1992). Lady and the Scoundrel is a historical western romance series that includes Texas Vixen (1986), Rogue's Lady (1988), and Fortune's Lady (1989). Lady and the Cowboy is a historical western romance series that includes Thompson's first novel Texas Treasure (1985), as well as Texas Triumph (1987), Texas Blonde (1987), and Bold Texas Embrace (1989). At that time in the late 1990s, Thompson was working for the March of Dimes, and several of her volunteers were midwives. Thompson felt it was kismet because she loves history, and she had fallen in love with New York City, and Greenwich Village in particular, when her daughter attended New York University Tisch School of the Arts. When Thompson heard Berkley Publishing was looking for a writer for a series set in turn of the 20th century New York City with a midwife heroine, she wrote a proposal adding a detective character, and was hired to write the Gaslight Mystery series. In 1996, her publisher let her go, and her agent encouraged her to try writing mysteries. Thompson began writing historical romance novels in the 1980s.
